As lighting automation is a staple in new buildings because of energy codes and standards, these are discussed in detail as well. Purposes and Goals
Lighting control plays an essential role in every lighting system. First, it allows the lights to be turned ON and OFF using a switch. Second, it can also allow light output to be varied via the use of multilevel switching, dimming or other strategies.

Controls and Energy Codes and Standards
Energy codes provide a minimum standard of energy efficiency in construction of buildings. They are approved by law for each state or local jurisdiction and enforced by local code officials. Most commercial building energy codes are based on energy standards developed by organizations such as ASHRAE, publisher of the 90.1 energy standard, and the International Code Council (ICC), publisher of the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) model energy code.
