Daylighting

Daylight design refers to the design of the building elements such as windows and skylights, which admit daylight in buildings. Daylighting considerations are most important in building and space designs. Successful daylighting designs offer significant benefits with respect to comfort and occupant satisfaction. Unsuccessful daylighting designs, however, result in failures with respect to comfort, occupant satisfaction, energy requirements, and economics.

All spaces with fenestration systems, such as windows and skylights, are affected by daylight. In such spaces, daylighting design should be the first step in the lighting design process. Electric lighting design should then be focused on complementing daylight during daytime and providing proper illumination on its own during nighttime.
